COMMON SPORTS INJURIES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Common sports injuries

Sports injuries are not uncommon, but being injured while playing sports can take you out of the game fairly quickly. Depending on its severity, such a mishap could even prevent you from participating in sports altogether.

The team at Surrey Sports Physio can help you recover from damage to your body sustained during athletic engagement. However, our top concern is the well-being of our patients. Therefore, we would prefer that you remain in top condition and never require our services.

In order to remain injury-free, you should be aware of the most common sports injuries:

  • Knee Injury – Getting an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear can be very painful. This may happen when you stop suddenly, quickly change direction, or land after a jump. You can also sustain a different kind of knee injury from repetitive movement.

  • Shin Splint – Shin splints may result from such conditions as stress fractures, overuse of the muscles, weak core muscles, and arch collapse in the foot.

  • Hamstring Strain – It is not uncommon to strain a hamstring while participating in a contact sport.

  • Ankle Sprain – You might sprain your ankle when you try to catch a ball and land too hard. Any time you twist your foot or land hard on your ankle, an ankle sprain is possible.

  • Tennis Injury – The most common elbow injury could be the kind referred to as “tennis elbow.” You do not need to play tennis to manifest this condition. It is the result of repetitive motion, so you could also experience it after playing golf or any of the racquet sports.

  • Groin Pull – Pulling a groin muscle may result in much discomfort. You might strain or tear your groin while jumping, running, or changing your direction.

Now that you can identify some of the possibilities, here are some of the best ways to avoid them:

  • Warm Up Properly – Always warm up your muscles before you participate in sports. Warm-up exercises may be specific to a particular sport, and they can also be more general in nature.

  • Wear the Right Gear – Make sure that you wear suitable gear for any sports activity. This might include a helmet, a face mask, protective pads, or a mouth guard.

  • Get Rest – Never engage in sports when you are ill or very tired. Also, be sure to rest between games or sessions. If you are in any kind of pain, get some rest and let your body heal before you play again.

  • Stay in Good Condition – You can prevent some injuries simply by keeping your body in shape. The more that your muscles are toned and fit, the better chance you have of avoiding an injury.

  • Know the Rules – The rules of any game may have much to do with keeping players safe. Learn the rules of the sports you participate in, and always abide by them.

A sports injury can be painful and annoying, and it could temporarily or permanently keep you from participating. If you have injured yourself while playing a sport, you should receive physiotherapy treatment as soon as possible. The staff members at Surrey Sports Physio are here to help.
