Scope of Practice

Physiotherapy plays an important role in the Canadian health care system. Within this system, physiotherapists work together with other health care providers including physicians, occupational therapists, nurses, social workers, speech pathologists, respiratory technicians and others. A physician’s referral is not required to receive physiotherapy treatment.

An initial physiotherapy assessment is completed during the first visit, following which an individualized treatment program is designed.

Physiotherapists may use a number of treatment methods, including:

  • Soft Tissue Mobilization and Manipulation
  • Specific Exercises
  • Electrical Modalities
  • Laser and Ultrasound
  • Mechanical Traction
  • Assistive Devices — Walking Aids, Orthotics, Prosthetics, Splints, Braces, Etc.
